The daughter of former slaves, Mary McLeod Bethune became a pioneering educator, college founder, stateswoman, civic leader, and civil rights activist. Her legacy as one of Florida’s and the nation’s most influential leaders spans 50 years. In this presentation, State Archives education officer Katrina Harkness shares excerpts from letters, interviews and telegrams to tell her story in her own voice.
