The Handmaid’s Tale is a futuristic, dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood published in 1985. It is set in a near future New England in a patriarchal, totalitarian state called the republic of Gilead. The novel explores themes of powerless women in a patriarchal society. Offred is the central character, narrator and one of the “Handmaids”: women who are forcibly assigned to produce children for the ruling class in Gilead. The book appears on the American Library Association’s list of most challenged books and has been banned in school libraries in numerous states including Florida. Instructor, Lynn Peterson, will highlight literary aspects of the novel such as the theme, setting, and symbolism. Join us for a robust discussion of this modern classic. Fee $5.
